여전히 신규 비즈니스 모델을 구상하거나 평가할 때 가치사슬모델(Value Chain)을 많이 사용한다. 하지만 기존 Value Chain 관점은 사용자를 저 끝단에 놓고 수용자적 입장으로 사용자의 참여범위를 한정짓고 컨텐츠부터 단말기까지의 Flow 만을 중시해왔다. 일명 CPNT(Content-Platform-Network-Terminal)라는 프레임워크를 가지고 플랫폼을 어떻게 장악할지 컨텐츠를 어떻게 통합할 건지가 중요한 이슈였다. 즉 이 구조로는 사용자의 참여나 파트너의 참여는 구상 자체가 힘든 구조다.
하지만 에코시스템 관점으로 접근하면 그림은 달라진다. 에코시스템 관점은 서비스와 비즈니스를 사용자와 사업자, 광고주 등의 Actors들이 상호작용하는 클러스터(Cluster)로 보고, 그 안에서 컨텐츠와 이해관계, 이익, 가치 등의 흐름을 보는 것이다. 중요한 것은 바로 써드 파티(3rd Party) 업체도 사용자들도 모두 파트너가 된다는 점이다.
많은 예가 있겠으나 최근 웹 2.0의 사례로 많이 인용되고 있는 구글 서비스 중 하나인 구글맵(Google Map)을 예로 들어보자. 구글 맵의 Open API를 사용해서 매쉬업(Mash Up) 서비스를 제공하는 서비스와 사이트는 그 수를 헤아리기 힘들다. 구글 맵 매쉬업 서비스를 소개하고 있는 한 블로거가 작년말까지 파악된 것만 해도 300개가 넘는다. 구글의 경쟁력있는 맵 서비스를 신규 사업자 심지어 개인들도 자신이 원하는 서비스로 끼워 만들 수 있게 되면서 부동산, 카풀, 지역주차 서비스부터 범죄자 찾기까지 다양한 매쉬업 서비스들이 나오고 있다. 이는 기존에 맵 서비스들이 이용료를 받고 ASP 형태로 제공하던 방식과 다르다.
